In this current phase of modern living, mobility is an important element for individuals who work and study. In Metro Manila the horrendous and hellish traffic situation led to the emergence of innovations to make mobility easier for people to work, study and play.

One of the solutions that came out was the introduction of micro studios led by Point Blue Inc. This small units enables working people, especially millennials, to have a place where they can stay at affordable prices.

The BusinessMirror interviewed some millennials to get their feedback and experiences staying in a micro studio.

For Kim Aimei Seng, head of lending product in Mynt, living in a micro studio unit gives a millennial like her the right balance in getting a living space and affordability. Given the high price of space in the Bonifacio Global City, she said a micro studio is the right option.  “You get the perks of a condominium unit at an affordable price. Who would want to spend majority of their earnings on rental alone,” she pointed out.

Jennifer Pampellona, who works at the International School, Manila, said living in a  micro studio appeals to millennials as it offers the basic  essentials that go well with their fast-paced lifestyles.

Kristine Rose Gamba likes to stay in a micro studio unit because of its minimalistic style where she can maximize the space. “It is appealing for the reason that a person can fully enjoy the functions of the place since it is designed especially for millennials,” she said.

Kim said she likes the price points offered by micro studios as she can rent it around half the price of an average condominium unit. “It is super hassle-free since everything is provided! It’s fully furnished, with Wi-Fi connection, and even free twice-a-month bathroom cleaning,” she explained.

On her part, Pampellona said a micro studio has low maintenance and relatively cheaper than studio-type condo units in the Metro Area.

Gamba said she loves to live in a micro studio unit because they are near schools and most workplaces.

For Adrian Tan, he said a micro studio unit is appealing because of its minimalist style, privacy and value for money.

“Since the space is small, you really have to make sure you only buy the things you need. Living without clutter is really therapeutic. While sharing space can be cheaper, it’s also difficult accommodate a roommate, especially when you get older,” he said.

“You get what you pay for. I’m not sure how other micro studio units are, but the ones at Point Blue really have value for money. It provides all your basic needs, plus good security system, Internet connection and 24/7 assistance from the courteous staff,” Tan added.

Kim thinks the millennials would primarily be the market of micro studios. Nevertheless, any individual belonging to another generation who wants to have a peace of mind at an affordable price would love to stay in such place.

“I think it’s more designed to single people because the space is ideal for one person. But again, it won’t be too bad for newly married,” she said.

Pampellona said a micro studio is ideal for singles who are building their careers and enjoying the single life.

Gamba pointed out that millennials will appreciate more living in a micro studio because they don’t generally use the other functions of a normal condominium unit like the kitchen.  “Micro studios are best suited for single people because of its minimalistic design and very particular functions,” she pointed out.

For Tan, being single is definitely an advantage for an individual is staying in a micro studio unit. If the person is planning to start a family, he believes it will still be fine as long as they are planning not to have children in the near future.

The respondents expressed a high degree satisfaction in their stay at Point Blue.

“It has been great! I love being in such an affordable place with so much peace of mind. The rooms are great and I even got a room with great sunset views. For a person like me who’s very focused on achieving my goals, this is a perfect place for me. I can read lots of books [beside a huge window] and focus on personal development while not breaking the bank,” Kim explained.

JR Yujuico, CEO of Point Blue Inc., said the emergence of more micro studios in other parts of Metro Manila will be inevitable because the demand for convenient, affordable and private housing will only continue to grow. “Point Blue’s micro studios are the future of living, especially with the rise of densely populated megacities around the world,” he said.

To meet the growing demand of young professionals looking for affordable living spaces near their workplace without sacrificing privacy, style and convenience, Point Blue, recently launched Ricarte BGC, which is located along General Ricarte Street, South Cembo, Makati City. This six-story building that offers 100 integrated micro studio units for rent, is just a 10-minute ride to the Makati Central Business District. “We were overwhelmed and encouraged by the positive response of the market to our first building, Bonifacio Point, that is why we are ramping up construction of our other projects within the vicinity of the Makati and Taguig CBDs,” he said.

For only P10,500 to P12,800 all-in rental per month, residents will get a micro studio unit that is fully furnished with a six-inch mattress, blinds, underbed and hanging storage, cabinet, air-conditioner, microwave oven, kitchenette with sink, chair and table, toilet, bidet shower with heater, and access to high-speed Internet connection similar to those used by BPO companies to minimize downtime.

All microstudios are well-ventilated and include theater-quality soundproofing to give residents the peace and privacy they deserve. Rental prices are dependent on the floor location and the size of the unit, which are around 11 square meter.
